Learning how to play poker is fairly simple. The rules and principles of the game are very basic but it’s up to you to determine whether you will be a winning or losing poker player as decision making during play is very important in separating the men from the boys. The objective of the game is to win the pot. The pot is the money (usually chips) placed in the middle of the table. To win the pot, you either need to be holding the highest poker hand or make the other players at the table believe that you have the best hand…even if you don’t! Making other player’s believe that you are holding the best poker hand at the table when you actually don’t is called bluffing.

A hand begins by all players at the table putting an ante into the pot. An ante is a like amount contributed by all players to the pot that is determined before play starts. If the game your playing uses blinds, this means that one or two (usually two) players place a bet before the cards are dealt. These bets are known as the small blind and the big blind. Blinds are rotated around the table during play to assure that all players pay in an equal amount during the session.

After the ante or blinds have been established, the players bet can bet and/or raise after each round of cards is dealt. If you do not like the cards dealt to you, you can FOLD which means your throwing your cards away because you don’t believe that you have a good enough hand to win the pot. Once you have folded, your opportunity to win the current pot is gone. This also means you don’t contribute anymore money to the current pot as well.

All players bet (call) until betting ceases and the player with the best hand wins the pot.

While bluffing is an important part of the game, we don’t recommend you do this often as most of the time somebody at the table is going to have a solid hand. Not only that, but other players will pick up on your style of play and poker tells and call your bluff!
